The castle of Kyparissia

Among the landmarks of significant historical value in the area, the castle of Kyparissia is a must-visit. Dominating above the town and offering a breath-taking view of the endless Ionian Sea, it dates to the Frankish times but was built on the foundations of a Byzantine fortress. Even closer to Marathos, stands the castle of Pylos, also known as Niokastro, built by the Ottomans in 1573, after their defeat in the Battle of Lepanto, to protect the southern entrance of Navarino bay and control the maritime trade route from East to West and vice versa. Inside the castle, the ruins of houses and other buildings are preserved to date, whilst the local mosque, after the Greek liberation revolution, was converted into the Orthodox Church of the “Metamorphosis of Jesus Christ”. One of the most important fortification landmarks in the area, built during the Middle Ages, is the castle of Methoni, as the town was an intermediate stop on the journey of Christians to the Holy Land. From its northern side, it seems as if it divides the sea in half to protect sailors looking for anchorage.

Water is omnipresent

In Messinia, water is omnipresent, not only because of its coastline but also in the mountains and the plains. The waterfall of Kalamari is relatively less famous, despite its stunning beauty, a true secret gem. Only a few kilometres from the lagoon of Gialova in Pilos, it is around 20 meters high and forms a small pond where you can rest and swim. The waterfalls of Polilimnio, the dazzling blue lake of Messinia as the locals describe them, are located near the village of Charavgi. Even though they are reachable only through a walking path, the experience is exquisite and absolutely worth every moment of anticipation. The rugged terrain of the area shapes fifteen small lakes that await you to explore them.

Finally, a little further away, the archaeological site of Ancient Messini still stands to demonstrate the magnificent history of the Peloponnese. The city of Messini flourished in the 4th century BC after the defeat of the Spartans, without ever being destroyed. So even today, observing its ruins, the traveller forms an excellent understanding of life in ancient times. The findings that have come to light include an ancient theatre, the agora, the gymnasium, sanctuaries, temples, statues, springs, and residencies. The exceptionally fortified walls of Ancient Messini kept it alive for thousands of years, and now it is your turn to peek at its glorious past.
