Marathos: Where the heart of the summer bliss beats
At the western tip of the Peloponnese, just before the point where the deep blue sea merges with the azure horizon, lies Marathopolis, also called Maratho by the locals.
Blessed by the Ionian Sea, located in Messinia, amidst beaches with fine sand and crystal-clear waters, Marathopolis began its modern history in 1859 but carries the civilization of ancient times as well. Just across the harbour of Marathos, you can explore the small island of Proti, a pirate hideout where ruins of a Mycenaean or prehistoric acropolis are preserved to date, along with wishes for safe travels carved on the rocks since Byzantine times.
Soul rest
Whitewashed sidewalks and wide roads lead to a unique summer adventure within a 40 kilometres radius in every direction. The vast olive grove between Marathos and Gargalianoi soothes the soul, while the region’s olive oil is renowned for its high quality and rich flavour. Heading towards Filiatra and Kyparissia, north of the village, you will find the golden beach of Lagouvardo, named after the river which flows there, named Kalá Nerá, which testifies to its beauty as in Greek it literally means “Good Waters”. To the south, towards Pylos, there is Barlas with its remarkable caves, the welcoming beaches of Romanos and Golden Coast, known for their lively seabed, perfect both for swimming and diving. If you venture a bit further, you will discover the round-shaped, unique ecosystem of Voidokilia beach, and if you are up for a challenge, you can approach it by walking alongside the coastline of Gialova lagoon.

Creating the best memories
Locals say that Proti island across the harbour protects Marathos from the wild sea during storms. Even though the islet is uninhabited, it hosts the monastery of Panagia Gorgopigi, and during summer months a small boat makes the crossing every day. On September 23rd, the church is celebrating, also hosting a small traditional festival, in Greek called “panigiri”, in the village. Submerged beneath the surface, in the bay of Vourlia beach, lies the wreck of a merchant ship from World War II.
The sea, the land, and the olive groves provide the fresh, raw materials for the unique gastronomy of the entire region. Taverns and small restaurants, with simple, local products and fresh fish, offer high quality, almost home-made food and wine from Peloponnesian varieties vineyards, creating the best memories and an exceptional taste of summer that will accompany you back to the winter city noise.
Endless choices
Even though there are no beaches in Marathopolis, you will most probably see teenagers diving straight from the cliffs into the crystal-clear waters, laughing with joy and serenity.
If you find yourself in Marathos during Easter, you will also experience the traditional burning of the effigy of Judas, and on August 6th, each year, there is another “panigiri” dedicated to the “Metamorphosis of Jesus Christ”. The village truly offers endless choices, even for the most demanding visitor. Therefore, during your vacation, it magically becomes the centre of the world, your world.
